Year Two

The classes in Year Two are Kingfishers and Jays. There are 60 children across Year 2.


We have two well-resourced classrooms and a separate outdoor area. We also make regular use of the cookery room, library and outdoor learning spaces.


The children can enter the class from 8:40am onwards and we begin our day with handwriting practise and reading.  Children can independently change their reading book in the ‘Book Nest’ and read quietly on their own, with a friend or with an adult. The children will read with an adult at least 3 times a week.  After the children choose 'Child of the Day'.  Everyone gets to experience this.


The children then move onto a series of discrete or focused teaching activities, this might be as a whole class or in smaller groups. For example some children might be cooking whilst another group are researching in the library and another group are carrying out a maths task in the classroom. We offer four focussed daily session which could include Guided Reading, Maths, English and Phonics, Science, Art, music and P.E. One of the PE sessions this term is swimming at the local leisure centre which will be followed by trampolining.


We make a lot of use of our outdoor environment where our learning in the forest area reflects our forest school curriculum.  We make dens, have campfires, and toast marshmallows and enjoy hot chocolate.


Lunch-time for Year Two runs from 12:20 – 1:15pm. The children have the opportunity to participate in a wide range of activities such as football, music and team games.


During the morning we have assembly where children take part in either singing, collective worship or a class assembly where we learn more about each other. Friday is our Star of The Week assembly where parents are invited to come and share some learning that has taken place and celebrate different children’s successes.


Our staff organise, plan and deliver an exciting theme based curriculum that can last between 6-8 weeks. This could be anything from learning about Roald Dahl, Penguins and London to what you might find on a beach. We organise regular trips that will link to the theme, these are sometimes based around the exploration of our local environment and other times are further afield with organised transport. We may visit Mottisfont Abbey, Marwell Zoo, London museums, and the seaside during the year.


On Friday afternoon we have Discovery Time when the children can choose to learn within workshops in the classroom settings.  Learning activities include reading, writing, maths games, science small world and creative.  We also use the outdoor environment where we explore our woodland, play outdoor games and enjoy a digging area, class gardens, sand and water play.


Transition within the School


A programme of transition is  planned within the school across the year groups. During the year children have the opportunity to visit other classes and work with other staff. Towards the end of the year the children visit their new classes on several occasions to become familiar with new learning environments and staff. Staff begin to form relationships with the children they will be receiving. They plan time to discuss the children, thinking about individual needs.


Transition to Junior School


A similar programme of transition is planned during the year prior to the children leaving the infant school to go to the junior school. Year 2 and Year 3 class teachers meet during the year to plan for the provision of all the children. The children in the Year 2 classes visit the school several times during the year prior to transfer, including a lunchtime visit, an assembly and time in their new classrooms. In the summer term children are invited to join after school clubs at the junior school when spaces are available. Members of the junior school team, including the head of school, pastoral worker and class teachers make visits to the infant school to introduce themselves and get to know the children.


Records of progress and results of assessments, including End of Key Stage1 results and teacher assessments are shared with and passed on to the junior school in order to continue the assessment process and ensure smooth transition. Children with particular needs are given further support, orientation and social stories to make positive transitions.


We invite parents to visit the junior school with their child and we offer parents the opportunity to ask any questions they may have at a ‘Meet the staff’ session with members of the junior school team.


We are fortunate to be able to work closely and effectively with our junior school colleagues. Each year we review the impact of our transition activities and information sharing. Feedback from our colleagues about how confidently the children adapt and mature is very positive.
