ART

Intent

At Knights Enham Nursey anf Infant School, we value art and place a great emphasis on its importance as part of a broad and balanced curriculum. Art enables children to express themselves in a creative, imaginative manner. We intend to give the children many opportunities to develop their skills and to express their interests, thoughts and ideas with individuality and creativeness flowing through everything they do.

Implementation

The teaching of art is based on an inspirational curriculum and is linked to our learning topics. Each year group has a learning topic each half term and areas covered include tile printing, still life, clay modelling, collage and sculpture as well as painting, sketching and exploring a variety of art mediums.
In EYFS art and design plays an important role in children’s development. They are taught to represent their own ideas, thoughts and feelings through this creative subject. The children experiment with colour, texture and materials.

Teaching of art in Key Stage 1

Each year group has a learning topic each half term and the main creative projects alternate half termly between art and design technology. These projects are carefully chosen to reflect the learning themes Art projects are either based around artist studies appropriate to the theme or are projects such as tile prints of individual owl drawings made whilst studying nocturnal animals or pastel art work of rockets whilst studying space.
Children are taught to use a range of materials creatively, to use drawing, painting and sculpture to develop and share their ideas, experiences and imagination and to develop a wide range of art and design techniques. The children learn about the work of a range of artists, they explore the artist’s chosen mediums and use the artist’s work to inspire their own.

Impact

Children will become creative learners with a broad base of artistic skills with which to move into Key Stage 2. Creativity will be valued for its unique place in children’s learning, especially supporting the celebration of individuality. Children will have an appreciation of a range of artists and will move forward in their learning with increased confidence in their ability to explore and represent their imagination, ideas and feelings through art.
